Today marks the anniversary of York City's first-ever game at their current stadium - 31st August 1932, and the official opening of Bootham Crescent. More than 8,000 spectators packed into the ground to witness York being held to a 2-2 draw by Stockport County in the Old Division Three North..

Outside-left Tom Mitchell had the honour of scoring the hosts opening goal at their new home. He later went on to manage the club between March 1937 and February 1950, as well as giving valuable wartime service in the RAF. Reg Baines later added a second goal from the penalty spot.

The York line-up that day was: Duckworth, Archibald, Johnson, G. Maskill, Harris, Bolton, Williams, Fenoughty, Baines, McDonald, Mitchell.

City had already lost their opening game of the season 1-0 at Crewe Alexandra. They were also heavily defeated in their subsequent home game, 6-2 against Rochdale before finally marking their first win at Bootham Crescent at the third attempt. Baines converting another penalty as part of his hat-trick and an overal tally of 29 for the season, while inside-forward Tom Fenoughty was also on target in a 4-3 triumph.

York at least wrapped up their campaign in style by hammering bottom club Darlington 6-1 in front of their own supporters, although that was only sufficient to earn them a final position of twentieth in the table. Despite that they still managed an average home gate of 4,370 at their new stadium.

Salford City 3 York City 2

York City appear to be left scrapping for a play-off place at best following a rather flattering 3-2 defeat at promotion rivals Salford City.

Skipper Liam Hogan - who scored for the hosts in the FA Cup meeting between the two clubs five weeks ago - netted in each half and either side of Jack Redshaw's long overdue strike.

Late replies from substitutes Louis Almond and Aidan Connolly simply masked another seriously inept performance from their opponents.
