Longer deal lures defender

Experienced defender Clarke Carlisle has left York City after being offered a permanent deal at Northampton Town.

"He said he now needs to make plans for the rest of the season and it will be better for him to do that now moving forward" - Clarke Carlisle
The 33-year-old joined the Minstermen at the end of August on a short-term deal running until January. But the lure of an eighteen-month contract at Sixfields has seen him move on after only fourteen games.

The former Blackpool, QPR and Burnley centre-back initially arrives on loan until completing a permanent deal in the New Year.

"The offer of an 18 month contract against a 5 month contract can't be passed up at 33!," Carlisle commented on Twitter. "I want to thank Gary Mills and all the boys at York City. It was short but sweet. Best wishes for the rest of the season and God bless!"

PFA chairman Carlisle had previously spoken to Northampton boss Aidy Boothroyd over the summer after playing eighteen times for the Cobblers last season whilst on loan from Burnley.

"Aidy offered me a contract from January moving forward," Carlisle told BBC Sport. "Gary Mills has helped expedite that. He said he now needs to make plans for the rest of the season and it will be better for him to do that now moving forward."
