York City boss Gary Mills believes teenage defender Tom Allan can successfully make the step up to the Football League before the end of the current season.

"I think we have a great player on our hands" - Gary Mills
The 6'4" centre-back and self-confessed City fan signed an eighteen-month contract with his hometown club earlier this week after more than a decade at Bootham Crescent.

Second-year scholar Allan, 18, has already appeared at first-team level during pre-season and goes straight into the senior squad at Plymouth Argyle this weekend.

"He can play as a left-sided centre-half or as a left-back but he's played in the centre more this season and was outstanding there for the reserves this week at Scunthorpe," Mills told The Press. "I'm absolutely delighted to offer him a contract now rather than wait until February or March because I feel it's the right time and he deserves it.

"He's been training with the first team for a while and has done exceptionally well," he continued. "I think we have a great player on our hands, who can be an outstanding one because he's listening and learning all the time. I don't think it will be long before he's making his League debut because he's coming on every week."
