Mills reserves judgement over midfielder

York City's out-of-favour midfielder Jonathan Smith could still return to the club despite reportedly being very keen to join Luton Town.

"If he decides it's not right for him to come back and he wants to stay at Luton then that might happen" - Gary Mills
The 26-year-old completed a surprise loan move to the Hatters at the beginning of November, which was just three months after making a much-heralded return to the Minstermen from last season's League Two champions Swindon Town.

Smith has since been quoted in the Luton media as being desperate to complete a permanent switch to the Conference side, although York boss Gary Mills was reserving judgement on those comments until speaking directly to the player.

"There's nothing wrong with saying you're enjoying your football," Mills told The Press. "But if he's saying he wants to stay there and doesn't want to come back here then that's different.

"He's not told me that and I'm sure he would have done because that's the kind of relationship we have," he continued. "If he decides it's not right for him to come back and he wants to stay at Luton then that might happen and we'd have to move on."
