York City captain Chris Smith hopes supporters remain firmly behind their side ahead of a crucial couple of home games.

"They have every right not to be happy with the performance and we wanted to thank them for making the effort" - Chris Smith
The Minstermen first entertain struggling Bristol Rovers this weekend and then follow that up with a visit from league leaders Gillingham seven days later.

Some of the travelling fans vented their anger towards the team and management at the end of their latest defeat to Plymouth Argyle on Saturday. But Smith is hoping the supporters stick with the players to help them through their current difficulties as they seek to improve on a record of just four wins from their last twenty games.

"At the end, we were going over to clap them and thank them irrespective of the result," Smith told The Press. "There were a few booing and some fans were shouting stuff at certain players, management and staff.

"That's what they want to do, but some of the verbals were a little harsh," he continued. "They have every right not to be happy with the performance and we wanted to thank them for making the effort. They had probably spent a lot of money and I know it's disappointing for them, but we feel it as well."
