Enforcer back to boost City

York City manager Gary Mills has welcomed the return of midfielder Jonathan Smith to Bootham Crescent.

"He knows that he's a good player and it's down to him to force his way into my team" - Gary Mills
The 26-year-old was recalled early from a loan spell at Luton Town and goes straight into the squad for the weekend arrival of lowly Bristol Rovers to Bootham Crescent. In his absence the Hatters crashed 5-2 at new Conference leaders Newport County last night.

"We are pleased to have him back," Mills told The Press. "We've lost a couple of players to injury so it's nice to make the squad that little bit bigger and stronger. He knows that he's a good player and it's down to him to force his way into my team by starting to do what he's good at.

"Winning second balls is his game and one of his many strengths," he added. "He wasn't doing it to the level you'd expect from him before, but we've got him back to get him back to his best and to help us to start winning matches."

Smith made thirteen appearances for the Minstermen after rejoining them in the summer until being allowed to move to Kenilworth Road in November. He scored once in seven appearances whilst there.

Meanwhile, Mills has confirmed that fellow midfielder Lee Bullock won't be recalled early from a loan spell at Gateshead.
