Former midfielder tames Wolves

Former York City midfielder Alex Lawless scored a 46th minute winner as non-league Luton Town shocked Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 in their FA Cup third round tie at Kenilworth Road.

Lawless volleyed home straight after the break from ex-City loanee Jon Shaw's knock down to secure the hosts a place in the fourth round draw.

The Hatters' side also included their recent signing from York, Jonathan Smith, in midfield as well as another one-time Bootham Crescent loan player, Hungarian-born centre-back Janos Kovacs.

Wolves' defeat had serious repercussions on their Norwegian manager Stale Solbakken who was sacked following the game.

Elsewhere, fellow Conference side Macclesfield Town came from behind to surprise Championship leaders Cardiff City 2-1 at Moss Rose with two late goals from former Luton striker Matthew Barnes-Homer.
