Worthington remains positive

Nigel Worthington was still looking for positives after seeing his York City side begin his tenure with a 3-2 defeat at bottom club AFC Wimbledon.

"Their commitment and their energy, I can't fault the players at all" - Nigel Worthington
It further extended the visitors' winless sequence to a dozen games and left them in even deeper trouble towards the foot of the table.

Skipper Chris Smith struck twice as his side netted more than once in a game for the first time since defeating Burton Albion 3-0 on New Year's Day.

"I thought the players participation in that was outstanding they kept going right until the final whistle, which showed a lot of character so I was delighted with that," Worthington told BBC Radio York. "But if you score two goals away from home you should be getting something from the game.

"There was a lot to deal with but we dealt with it and things we've been working on, a lot of them came off but there's one or two we've got to continue to work on and improve on to make better," he added. "But their commitment and their energy, I can't fault the players at all."

The Minstermen will still need a significant step-up in terms of performances if they are to escape an immediate return into non-league, beginning with successive home games against Rochdale and Port Vale next week.
