'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Worthington issues stern ultimatum

York City manager Nigel Worthington has demanded his underperforming players start repaying the loyalty of the club's supporters following another setback at the weekend.

"I've been in the game long enough to know when I am getting sold short" - Nigel Worthington
The Minstermen extended their current winless run to fourteen games with a comprehensive 2-0 home defeat to promotion-hopefuls Port Vale, who themselves had come into the contest on the back of a really bad run of just a solitary point from their last fifteen available.

The visitors were already lacking a number of key players and then proceeded to miss a penalty, but still comfortably took the honours with goals from Jennison Myrie-Williams and Lee Hughes.

It was sufficient to leave York staring closer at the dreaded prospect of an immediate return into non-league, as now only one point separates them from the bottom of the table following a number of their rivals picking up points.

"It's a man's game and Saturday looked like boys against men," Worthington told The Press. "People are paying their hard-earned money coming to support the team and what they got back was simply not good enough. If I said anything else, everybody would think I was off my rocker.

"I've been in the game long enough to know when I am getting sold short and when players are not performing. It's a big test and it will be interesting to see who stands up to it," he added. "They are getting paid by this club and by the supporters. They have got to repay that with results."
