We lacked conviction - Worthington

Nigel Worthington was left reflecting on his side's inability to perform for the full duration after overseeing his third defeat in four games in charge of York City.

"We need more conviction around the opposition's goal" - Nigel Worthington
The Minstermen's hold on their Football League place is appearing increasingly tenuous following first-half goals from Elliot Benyon and Ryan Jarvis in a 2-1 defeat to Torquay United at Plainmoor.

Debutant Richard Cresswell converted a second-half penalty for the visitors after Gulls' Tom Cruise was sent-off but it wasn't anywhere near enough to save them.

"The game is 90 minutes long, it's not 20, and you cannot give the opposition a two-goal start because its tough going getting back into it, but I think they showed a lot of spirit," Worthington told BBC Radio York. "They passed the ball a lot better today than what we have done, which I was very pleased with, but we need more conviction around the opposition's goal.

"I probably think that maybe a little of the self-belief and the confidence is being jolted a little, so it's just about being brave and taking the responsibility on and making it happen," he added.

But York are seriously running out of opportunities to make anything happen with only six games remaining and still a couple of points separating them from immediate safety.
