Striker Richard Cresswell retires

York City striker Richard Cresswell has announced his retirement from football.

"I don't feel I can perform at the level I would like to anymore and that is very frustrating for me" - Richard Cresswell
The 36-year-old has managed just eight appearances this season after returning to the club on a permanent basis over the summer.

In recent months Cresswell has suffered from a serious eye complaint which has affected his performance level and also had issues with an earlier knee injury.

He crucially scored twice in five games for the Minstermen during a loan switch from Sheffield United at the end of last season.

Cresswell previously netted 24 times from 111 appearances in his first spell at Bootham Crescent while also becoming the first-ever York player capped by England at Under-21 level, until leaving for Sheffield Wednesday for a club record 950,000 deal in March 1999.

"It has been a difficult and emotional decision for me to make, but I feel it is now the right time for me to finish my playing career," Cresswell told York's official website. "Due to injury issues, I don't feel I can perform at the level I would like to anymore and that is very frustrating for me.

"I have had a wonderful career and have reached the highest level playing in the Premier League and can look back on some good times and great achievements," he continued. "However, I am now embarking on part two of my professional life and I am focussing on a future career coaching first team football."

In total the Bridlington-born marksman played more than 650 games and approached 150 goals during a fine career that also included spells with Leicester City, Preston North End, Leeds United and Stoke City.
