Door still open

The door of opportunity could still be open at York City for departing striker Richard Cresswell, according to chairman Jason McGill.

"My kids are York City fans and the club is special to me and always will be" - Richard Cresswell
The 36-year-old has left the club having this week announced his retirement from playing and rejected the chance of a coaching role within its academy.

"Richard has a genuine desire to see the club succeed. It's not just platitudes with him," McGill told The Press. "The fact he is leaving is a sad time for York City but it's the start of something new for Richard and he will always be welcome back in whatever guise that may be."

While the offered position wasn't suitable to meet the current requirements of Cresswell, who wants to be coaching at a more senior level having already done so at former club Sheffield United, the Bridlington-born marksman refused to rule out a return to Bootham Crescent in the future.

"It's my local club and the supporters gave me a great reception when I came back," he said. "I have told the chairman if I can help in any way at all, I would love to give something back to the club one day. My kids are York City fans and the club is special to me and always will be."
