York set to lose defender

York City's on loan right-back Luke O'Neill will almost certainly return to parent club Burnley in the New Year.

The 22-year-old is unable to extend his loan beyond its original three-month agreement due to his age and is set to depart Bootham Crescent in the first week of January.

The Minstermen are unlikely to be able to meet former Mansfield Town defender O'Neill's wage demands even if the Clarets are prepared to release him.

Manager Nigel Worthington is though expected to wrap up a permanent deal for fellow loanee Keith Lowe from Cheltenham Town. He also hopes to retain the services of Ben Davies, Elliott Whitehouse and Ryan Brobbel.

One player leaving the club is first-year professional right-back Mike Atkinson, who was recently loaned out to Northallerton Town and is now being released.
