Worthy unhappy at challenge

York City manager Nigel Worthington was deeply unhappy with the challenge that threatens to end top scorer Wes Fletcher's season.

"The challenge on Wes was a bad one. There was no intent to go for the ball at all" - Nigel Worthington
Fletcher was on the end of a horrible stamp from Portsmouth's dismissed skipper Ben Chorley as the visitors triumphed courtesy of Michael Coulson's early goal at Fratton Park.

The 23-year-old is suspected to have suffered medial ligament damage to his knee following a tackle that clearly incensed his team-mates as seven of them immediately surrounded the referee.

The Minstermen had by then already lost Northern Ireland international Josh Carson to what could be a similar injury, although there was absolutely no blame attached to that one.

"The challenge on Wes was a bad one. There was no intent to go for the ball at all," Worthington told The Press. "I never like to see anybody sent off but that was nasty. The one that saw Josh get injured was a good, solid challenge and he just got caught on the wrong side.

"Initially, it looks like both have damaged their medial ligaments but we won't know for sure what the extent of the damage is until we get them scanned on Monday," he added. "It would be disappointing to lose two players because it disrupts what we have been doing, but that's the game of football."
