Final heartache for Mills

Former York City manager Gary Mills' hopes of taking Gateshead back into the Football League were ended following a 2-1 defeat to Cambridge United in their play-off final at Wembley.

The U's took the lead six minutes after a frustrating opening half when Ryan Donaldson's corner was headed in at the far post by Liam Hughes.

Twenty minutes later ex-Gateshead midfielder Donaldson struck a sweet free-kick around the wall to double their advantage.

Gateshead offered themselves late hope with 38-year-old Jack Lester reacting first after fellow substitute Liam Hatch's header was blocked with ten minutes remaining.

Cambridge had former City striker Ashley Chambers as an unused substitute and actually finished the game with ten-men when skipper Ian Miller was carried off - but still succeeded in matching the Minstermen's memorable play-off final and FA Trophy double of two years ago.
