York City midfielder Tom Platt continues to push hard for the season's opener at Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.

"I feel fit and have been playing quite well so I am ready to get going" - Tom Platt
The 20-year-old has enjoyed an impressive pre-season and is in serious contention for a start at Prenton Park.

Already noted as something of a goalscoring midfielder during productive loan spells at Harrogate Town, Platt has clearly 'muscled up' since last term and celebrated with a senior goal in the recent friendly against Nottingham Forest.

"I can't wait to get going," he told The Press. "It has been a good pre-season. I feel fit and have been playing quite well in the past few games so I am ready to get going now.

"Last season was a bit stop-start. I never really got going," Platt added. "I am looking forward to hopefully getting a good run in the team, get a start this week and press on from there."

Manager Martin Gray was leaving no doubt exactly where he believes the blame lies after blasting the latest display at Curzon Ashton as an "embarrassment and disgrace".

Curzon Ashton 4 York City 1

York City produced a shockingly atrocious performance while crashing 4-1 to lowly part-timers Curzon Ashton at the Tameside Stadium.

Home striker Niall Cummins claimed a first-half hat-trick having already seen a penalty saved by the outstanding Adam Bartlett, with Sam Walker adding to it after the break.

The visitors then had leading goalscorer Jon Parkin given a straight red card before new signing Alex Kempster impressively replied on his debut after coming off the bench.
