New signing David Ferguson wants to play a leading role in taking York City back to where they should be - the Football League.

The 23-year-old former Blackpool captain, midfielder and left-back has agreed a deal running until the end of the 2018-19 season having scored four goals in 14 appearances for National League North rivals Darlington this season.

"I've played more left-back but I can also play left midfield," Ferguson told York's official YouTube channel. "My strengths are getting forward; I'm a very attacking-minded player. I like running with the ball and trying to use my pace as an advantage.

"I played here for Darlo at the beginning of the season and there was a good atmosphere, brilliant. [York are a] massive club that shouldn't be where they are at the minute - and hopefully I can be some help to them getting back to where they should be.

"I've spoke to the manager [Martin Gray] and Dave Penney about the structure they are putting in. I think the organisation they've set out should be no problem and they should be where they want in a couple of seasons."

Ferguson is a current England 'C' international and has again been included in their latest plans having already skippered his country last time.

"I've been called up again and am away on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday," he added. "It's a training camp leading for selection next month for the final squad and a game against Slovakia.

"I was called up in the summer and it's nice to be called back up again. It's nice to get the captaincy, so obviously I'm doing something right."
