Video: Striker pulls rank to win it

Weekend match-winner Jon Parkin admits there was no way anybody else was taking the late free-kick that eventually accounted for Brackley Town at Bootham Crescent.

Having already cleverly won the 86th minute set-piece when drawing the foul outside the area, the veteran 35-year-old marksman duly stepped up and smashed the ball into the top corner to secure a vital maximum points.

Parkin had earlier registered the opening goal under new manager Martin Gray's reign as the Minstermen went on to triumph 2-1 at the expense of their promotion rivals.

"As soon as I got the free-kick, I thought to myself 'I'm having this'," Parkin told BBC Radio York. "Lawsy [Josh Laws] and Newts [Sean Newton] were both questioning it but with being the oldest player you can always pull rank a little bit.

"I don't think I could have got it up and down over the wall, it was too close," he explained. "Obviously there's a gap that side and I've managed to put it in the top corner.

"[For the first goal], Pars [Daniel Parslow] has won the flick on and it's just a reaction one really. I just had to get my head on it and luckily kept it down.

"It's pleasing to get any three points and I think that was my first goal here this season, which is obviously a bit of a relief. But that was a massive three points for us .

"We've obviously still got a lot of hard work to do; still got things to learn about how the gaffer's going to want to play. But I think if we put the effort and the commitment in that we have today, we'll not be far off."

York City 1 Alfreton Town 1

York City produced another deeply uninspiring display while being held 1-1 by lowly part-timers Alfreton Town at Bootham Crescent.

That was despite midfielder Simon Heslop earning them an early fifth-minute lead that was cancelled out by former York defender Tom Allan before the break.

Manager Martin Gray earlier made a single-change from the woeful 4-1 defeat at Curzon Ashton, with goalscorer Alex Kempster given a full debut as replacement for the suspended Jon Parkin. Louis Almon
