York City Ladies v Hartlepool United Women

York City Ladies v Hartlepool United Women

It's a big weekend for York City Ladies as they chase a first league victory of the season against newly-promoted Hartlepool United Women at Haxby Road on Sunday afternoon (kick-off 2.00pm).

A fourth successive defeat at Wallsend Boys Club Ladies last time out witnessed the Minsterbelles slipping to the bottom of the North East Regional Premier League.

The only goal of the contest had arrived when Rebecca George's soaring 35-yard free-kick midway through the second-half deceived stand-in goalkeeper Megan Bramham.

To their credit, City Ladies have actually remained well in each of those four losses, with three of them only being by the odd-goal.

The Minsterbelles have been close to their first points of the season

Indeed the Belles have conceded only six times in the process, although on the flip side they've managed just a solitary Ellie Regan strike during six hours of football.

Their cause certainly hasn't been assisted by a series of injuries, with key summer arrivals Chloe Precious, Jazz Whitwell and Laura Midgley ruled out along with midfield regulars Nikki Brown and Beth Clayton.

That witnessed them unfortunately travelling light for their latest fixture and without a recognised goalkeeper.

City Ladies have conceded six goals in their four league games

Opponents Hartlepool have found it rather tough since making the step up with their opening 3-3 draw at Wakefield being followed by successive home defeats to fellow newcomers Durham Cestria (0-3) and East Yorkshire Carnegie (2-4).

They were also beaten 3-1 by lower-ranked visitors South Shields in the Leagaue Cup; with their only successes so far coming in the FA Cup - both on their travels to Chester-le-Street (9-0) and Farsley Celtic (3-1).

Hartlepool twice visited York last season when taking on City's reserves, losing on both occasions - with a 4-3 League Cup defeat being followed by a 3-2 league reversal, although they did prove victorious 4-0 at home in between.

Other games this weekend have leaders Durham hosting Wakefield, while it's fourth against third as East Yorkshire Carnegie welcome Norton & Stockton Ancients, with Farsley taking on RACA Tynedale in the other fixture.
