York City Reserves 0 Mansfield Town Reserves 5
York City's young reserves suffered a second consecutive defeat as visitors Mansfield Town scored five times without reply at a decidedly soggy Bootham Crescent.
Goalkeeper Jon Worsnop took charge of an extremely youthful starting line-up while being assisted by Mark Spencer. Striker Jon Parkin had been due to partner him but unfortunately missed out due to illness.
Youth team manager Steve Torpey will be regularly leading City's second-string this season but was away on a Football Association coaching course at St George's Park.
His deputies therefore watched on as the visitors struck inside the opening minute; Rhys Bennett delivering a sweeping pass for Hayden White to surge inside the area and despatch into the corner.
Omari Sterling-James then drew a first save from Luke Simpson, one of only three City players with limited first-team experience. Indeed the vast majority of the home sixteen were actually youth-teamers, while recent trialist Tyler Walton was also handed another opportunity.
By contrast their opponents were significantly more practiced, and Alfie Potter - notably a goalscorer against York for Oxford United in the play-off final at Wembley in May 2010 - struck another attempt towards Simpson, who also saved low from the well-travelled Jimmy Spencer.
Former York loanee goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik next clutched at his top corner from Aaron Haswell, while Spencer once again tested Simpson before Walton blocked from Sterling-James.
However, the visitors still doubled their tally just ahead of the interval with Spencer heading in White's delivery at close-range.
City youngster Haswell at least had the ball in the back of the opposite net at the start of the second-half, but it was disallowed for offside.
Team-mate Zac Lawrence then headed off the line after Sterling-James lifted his attempted finish over Simpson, while trialist Walton drove a 25-yard reply narrowly wide.
But ex-Notts County, Cambridge United and Plymouth Argyle forward Spencer suddenly added his second of the afternoon from Sterling-James' pass with seventeen minutes remaining.
Former Burton Albion and Millwall midfielder Calum Butcher, once signed by current York CEO Jackie McNamara at Dundee United, then took advantage of Walton's short back-pass to claim a fourth goal for the visitors.
And Butcher similarly doubled his own return after decent work between substitute Zayn Hakeem and Potter, who also drilled over from distance in the final action of the contest.
