Video: Striker delighted with deal

Striker James Gray is simply relieved to have earned a permanent deal with York City running until the end of the season.

The 25-year-old former Northern Ireland Under-21 international has so far made three appearances for the Minstermen following his recent arrival on loan from National League club Torquay United.

"I'm delighted. As soon as I came through the door on loan I was working towards it being permanent," Gray admitted to York's official YouTube channel. "Obviously I've done enough but I still think there's a lot to come from me.

"When you come in on loan, and obviously with me being a north-east lad and wanting to stay on permanently, I've put a bit of pressure on myself. Now I know I'm here until the end of the season I think I can kick on.

"The size of the club, the fanbase, the way you get treated here as a player [persuaded me to sign]," he continued. "I was saying to a few of the lads, I've played for numerous clubs in the league and don't think I've been treated [as well].

"The set-up here is probably the best I've been at. I think everything's just in the right direction for the club to go one way and that's why I've stayed on board."

"We like James," commented City's sporting director Dave Penney. "As you can see on Saturday, it gave us options. It's always great to have four out-and-out strikers, that when the front two tire you can put fresh legs on and see the game out.

"Probably a month ago we'd have lost that because we didn't have the bodies or fresh legs to bring on. So it was great we could do that. It gives the manager great options. That's four proper strikers we've got at the club at the moment.

"We took him on loan initially just to make sure he was right for us. But we knew his character and personality and obviously James is delighted to sign. We feel he'll be a great benefit for the squad from now until the end of the season.

"The most important thing is competition for places," Penney stressed. "We feel in certain areas people have been guaranteed a place but now with the additions of Adam {Bartlett], Danny Rowe, Dave Ferguson, Gary Martin and James Gray, it adds competition for places.

"Obviously we've had to move people out that we didn't feel were going to figure. But that's the manager's decision and we try and back him as much as we can and hopefully this will make us stronger."
