Video: Pride in youngsters
Academy manager Mark Spencer was proud of the way his young scholars battled against an experienced Mansfield Town reserve side on Tuesday afternoon.
The Stags eventually ran-out as 5-0 winners at Bootham Crescent against youthful opponents that featured only four players with limited first-team experience: Luke Simpson, Jassem Sukar, Theo Wharton and returning trialist Tyler Walton.
Spencer was assisting alongside senior goalkeeper Jon Worsnop for the game due to the absence of youth-team manager Steve Torpey, who was away on a Football Association coaching course. Striker Jon Parkin had also been due to provide cover but was unwell.
"I thought initially the performance was really good," Spencer told York's official YouTube channel. "They came with a really strong side and a lot of League Two professional players in the ranks.
"So to only have four first-team players and the rest of them all scholars - they've done really well to compete physically and technically as well. Even though the result was 5-0 we were really proud and pleased with the whole squad.
"This is the whole reason why we wanted the reserves league back," he added. "That's why we did it last year and are doing it again this year. To give these boys who are under eighteen - seventeen-year-old scholars - the chance to come play against these big players from different clubs."
