Video: Gray upbeat despite Trophy exit

Manager Martin Gray was surprisingly upbeat despite York City relinquishing their hold on the FA Trophy in very disappointing fashion at Kidderminster Harriers.

The hosts struck twice inside a minute through James Pearson and Emmanuel Sonupe during another poor first-half display from their opponents, until substitute Amari Morgan-Smith replied with fourteen minutes remaining.

"Very disappointed. That was one competition that we wanted to go as far as we could," Gray told BBC Radio York. "So very, very disappointed not to come away with something out of that game today.

"There was not an awful lot in the game first-half but a minute of madness where we've conceded two goals within a minute," he continued. "But just before we've conceded, [David] Ferguson's had a great chance cutting inside on his right foot. You could have been 1-0 up at that stage and within three minutes you're 2-0 down.

"That's probably the best second-half performance I've had since I've been here and we've been beat. I thought some of the play against the best footballing passing team - we dominated second-half and deserved better than what we've got today.

"I thought second-half we controlled the game and the subs came on and make it even better," Gray added. "We're trying to change the style of play and mentality of the players in the club and that takes time.

"We've got to be patient but that's the best performance we've had, and I honestly believe that if we continue to play with that bravery on the ball, we're going to get where we need to get to. But we're just trying to change and get that winning culture back at the football club."

York City assistant manager Dave Penney believes it was a case of a couple of well-matched teams following the 2-2 draw with Spennymoor Town at Bootham Crescent.

Both sides were denied a sixth consecutive victory as York City twice led against promotion rivals Spennymoor Town at Bootham Crescent.

On loan defender Jonny Burn's third goal in nine games earned them a half-time lead that was cancelled out by Ryan Hall soon after the restart.

But Aidan Connolly restored the home advantage with seventeen minutes remaining, although that was swiftly matched by Andrew Johnson as the honours were eventually shared.
