Former York favourite lands Rangers job

Former York City midfielder Graeme Murty has been appointed manager of Glasgow Rangers until the end of the season.

The 43-year-old was placed in temporary charge following the dismissal of Pedro Caixinha in late October. He'd already been interim manager at Ibrox earlier in the year.

Rangers are currently third in the Scottish Premiership and have remained unbeaten in their last nine games while winning six.

"It's my job and the players' job to make ourselves irreplaceable," Murty told BBC Scotland. "I've always said you must aspire to be the best you possibly can be. If I do the best job I can hopefully I make it relatively simple for the board moving forward.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work as manager at Rangers. You don't just want do it for a short period of time," he added. "If I'm good at it and stand out hopefully I can get to do it for longer. That's my aim - to improve and move my career forward.!

While at Bootham Crescent, Murty made 141 appearances and scored nine goals, including starring in famous League Cup victories against Manchester United and Everton, until a then club record £700,000 move to Reading in the summer of 1998.
