Big Jon hits 36 twice in five days!
Ace goalscorer Jon Parkin set a new post-War club record of 36 goals in a calendar year with his first-ever York City hat-trick at North Ferriby United.
That beat Richard Brodie's previous best of 35 (26 National League/4 FA Cup/5 FA Trophy) memorably achieved in 2009. Brodie was interestingly also the last City player to bag a treble in a 5-0 home victory against AFC Wimbledon back in April 2010.
However, Parkin remains a single-goal short of Scottish centre-forward James Cowie's pre-war return of 37 in 1929. Of his, 32 were recorded in the Midland League, 4 in Division Three North and a solitary FA Cup strike.
Three years later, York-born legend Reg Baines also hit 36 - and all of those were notably while appearing as a Football League club in Division Three North.
Parkin initially scored once in his first five appearances this season, those including a 62nd minute substitute outing at Southport. That followed him previously missing the games against Bradford Park Avenue, Darlington and Nuneaton Town due to an ongoing calf problem.
But the redoubtable centre-forward has never looked back since and netted an incredible twenty goals in his next seventeen appearances, only failing to find the mark in five of them. Those include six penalties, while the only game he missed was at Harrogate Town in September.
That of course followed his 16 goals (13 National League/3 FA Trophy) in 28 games (23 National League/5 FA Trophy) last season after only returning to Bootham Crescent at the end of November.
Parkin had actually begun his second spell at York by scoring once (v Worcester City in the FA Trophy) in his opening four appearances, but after the turn of the year then plundered fifteen goals in his next 24 games, with the last of those famously at Wembley.
It leaves the Barnsley-born marksman with an absolutely outstanding return of 36 goals from 46 games in 2017, which is rather appropriate given that he celebrates his 36th birthday on Saturday!
Striker Jon Parkin's first goal of 2017 was in a 2-2 draw at Dover Athletic
