Grimsby Town Reserves 2 York City Reserves 1

There was a narrow 2-1 defeat for York City's reserves despite taking an early lead against Grimsby Town at the Cheapside Waltham Training Ground.

The Minstermen included wantaway former skipper Simon Heslop while their opponents notably featured recent York loanee Sean McAllister.

Also starting for them was Alex McMillan, the eighteen-year-old son of City's legendary Wembley-winning full-back Andy.

But it was York going in front on twelve minutes as Sam Muggleton's long throw was headed in by youth-team winger Noah Jackson.

Chris Clements shot narrowly wide at the other end before James Gray headed over another Muggleton throw before having a free-kick saved by Ben Killip.

Karleigh Osborne next lifted over Clements' delivery for the hosts at the back post, and then saw a further attempt turned behind by goalkeeper Luke Simpson.

However, Clements tapped in a low cross towards the far upright from Jonathan Hooper to level matters five minutes before the interval.

York introduced Aaron Haswell for midfielder Heslop at the start of the second-half, although it was Harry Cardwell heading wide an early Clements cross.

The visitors went close to reclaiming their lead when Gray's shot from outside the area was only denied by the woodwork.

But it was their opponents moving ahead with Harry Clifton on the mark after McMillan's 61st minute cross came back off the bar.

Cardwell was soon threatening another as Simpson turned aside before youth-team prospect Haswell went close with a 25-yard reply.

Both Clifton and Hooper then drew the York keeper into further action, while City goalscorer Jackson headed another Muggleton launch onto the roof of the net.
