Video: Skipper delighted to commit to City
Skipper Sean Newton wants to help York City towards promotion after signing a new two-year extension at Bootham Crescent.
The 29-year-old who scored on his weekend return at Darlington has handed the club a massive boost by extending a deal that could now see him leading it out at the new community stadium at the start of the 2019-20 campaign.
"We've been speaking about it for the last couple of weeks," Newton told York's official YouTube channel. "But I got injured and then focused on getting fit and put that to one side. And now I'm fit it's all been sorted and I'm delighted.
"I want to help get this club at least up one more division while I'm here," he continued. "I think we were unlucky to go down last year with the fight we had from January onwards.
"There's a chance of us still going up this year - and that's our goal, and I want to make sure that I stay here as long as I can and help the club achieve what they want to achieve.
"I've had a bit of interest [from elsewhere] and had a lot in the summer, but I'm more than happy and enjoy it here - and get on really well with the gaffer [Martin Gray]. And I just want to do as well as I possibly can and help this club climb up the divisions."
