Former skipper could get another chance

Former skipper could get another chance

FA Trophy winning former skipper Simon Heslop could still have a playing future at Bootham Crescent.

The 30-year-old midfielder hasn't featured for his hometown club since the end of October and recently spent time on loan to National League outfit Eastleigh.

That followed the former Wrexham playmaker, who is under contract with the Minstermen for the next eighteen months, stating that he no longer wanted to play for the club.

However, Heslop already appeared for City's reserves in their midweek 2-1 defeat at Grimsby Town - and might yet step back into first-team action for the upcoming visit to AFC Telford United on Tuesday evening.

"He had a bit of a groin and hamstring problem, so he wasn't available against Bradford," assistant manager Dave Penney told The Press. "But, hopefully, he'll be back in training on Monday and, then, it's the manager's decision whether he'll be involved on Tuesday night.

"We're a bit light on bodies with Sean McAllister and Alex Pattison going back to their clubs, so he would be a fresh pair of legs and I'll repeat what I've said before: Simon Heslop is more than good enough to play at National League North level," he added. "I think he could make our squad and team stronger and, if he gets involved, then performances on the pitch will dictate whether he stays in the side."
