Video: We were outstanding - Gray

Martin Gray described York City's 1-0 victory against leaders Salford City as their best display so far under his leadership.

Aidan Connolly's cross diverted in off the far post for the winning goal ahead of the interval, while the returning Jon Parkin also missed a second-half penalty.

That moved the hosts up to fifth in the table and within three points of the top-three, although having already played more games than each of their rivals.

"The grit and desire in the last fifteen minutes is exactly what my team's about," Gray told BBC Radio York. "We had to be at our best in that side of the game to get a result because you are playing against a very good team.

"We cleared two off the line in the first 15-20 minutes and that set the theme. And from Adam Bartlett making big saves to people making blocks, we did it well and got everybody behind the ball.

"So as much as Aidan Connolly was fantastic, what the team did off the ball was even more important today.

"We could have run away with it," he continued. "Jon [Parkin] puts the penalty in and it's game over. We counterattacked three or four times, and the keeper made a great save off Aidan Connolly with about twenty minutes to go when it was flying into the top corner.

"I thought the team performance today was outstanding and we've got to build on this now."

Meanwhile, Gray expects to still add to his squad next week despite a move for an unnamed player breaking down on Friday.

"We thought we had one across the line yesterday lunchtime but it didn't come off," he revealed. "But there will potentially be another signing early next week to strengthen the squad. We need competition."
