Video: Striker thrilled by 'whirlwind' move

Striker Alex Kempster has completed a "whirlwind" move from Whitley Bay to York City after scoring a hat-trick for their reserves against Hartlepool United.

The 22-year-old struck three times after the break and was immediately rewarded with a full-time contract until at least the end of the season.

He'd previously been playing part-time for Whitley Bay while also holding down a couple of jobs as a teacher and barman.

"I'm buzzing to be honest and it's a bit of a whirlwind," Kempster admitted to York's official YouTube channel. "Played the game and I've done quite well and scored a hat-trick. I spoke to the gaffer [Martin Gray] straight after the game and he's put his faith in me until the end of the season at least.

"I've got to take the opportunity," he continued. "It's something you strive for to be a professional footballer and play full-time.

"I think York have been watching me for a couple of months. I scored a hat-trick for Whitley Bay actually and I think that's where their interest came from.

"I haven't really had any professional clubs [before]. I've had a few trials now and again, but I haven't actually been given a professional contract. So I'm pleased the gaffer's given me that chance and I want to repay him with some goals.

"I want to try and get myself in the team first of all. Obviously it's a higher level but I don't feel like I can't do it - and hopefully a few goals to repay the gaffer."
