Video: City cast net for young talent
York City have been holding open scholarship trials in a bid to discover new talent.
Those were staged at the York Sport Village over a couple of days last week, having earlier drawn widespread applications from around seventy school-leavers hopeful of being offered scholarships starting in September.
"We've had about 60-70 people apply," academy manager Mark Spencer told York's official YouTube channel. "Surprisingly from all over the country. So there were a few people from London and Manchester - that would be too difficult. But we got a good proportion of them from the Yorkshire and north-east area, so it was really good.
"With us being a Yorkshire-based club, we're looking to recruit from within the area," he explained. "To try and give an opportunity to kids playing within the area. And also an opportunity for people travelling maybe about an hour away, so we're looking at Bradford, Middlesbrough, Teesside, Scarborough and Hull.
"We spotted some potential good players who have been invited back to the club. And hopefully they'll be part of our academy games programme on a weekend so we can really look at them more in depth as the weeks go on."
