Minstermen battle to another draw

Draw specialists York City made it seven in eight league games after Wes Fletcher's eighth goal of the season was cancelled out by Accrington Stanley's George Bowerman just before the break.

Former Accrington loanee Fletcher both won and scored the penalty that earned his side a 35th minute lead. But Bowerman forced in Piero Mingoia's cross to level ten minutes later.

Manager Nigel Worthington earlier made a couple of changes with Elliott Whitehouse and Lanre Oyebanjo being restored into midfield. On loan winger Ryan Brobbel missed out as the unfortunate sixth loanee along with Tom Platt.

Accrington seemed intent on delivering a number of early crosses but it was York midfielder Lewis Montrose sidefooting straight at recalled teenage goalkeeper Andrew Dawber on nine minutes. Nicky Hunt drove high over the crossbar in reply.

Montrose was soon back covering well inside his own area before Accies' Northern Ireland Under-21 international James Gray saw a header turned aside by his Republic of Ireland counterpart Aaron McCarey following the concession of a poor corner.

York midfielder Oyebanjo was then pushed over inside the area with keeper Dawber out of position but rewarded with only a corner kick.

However, the visitors were awarded a penalty with ten minutes of the opening half remaining when Fletcher was brought down by Dean Winnard. Fletcher picked himself up to send the keeper the wrong way from the spot - directly in front of the large bank of several hundred travelling fans.

Boosted by that Carson had another effort saved by Dawber and Bowerman hoisted over in reply before forcing a close-range equaliser from Mingoia cross just ahead of the break.

The visitors made a change at the interval with Oyebanjo being replaced by Michael Coulson, who soon headed an early opportunity wide.

Carson had in the meantime switched across to the right flank and the Northern Ireland international missed from a narrow angle after Fletcher's through pass. Gray had already sidefooted wide by then.

Accrington were actually appearing the more likely side and Kai Naismith blazed wide and then forced McCarey to block. Mingoia and Peter Murphy also tried further efforts without success.

On loan defender Luke O'Neill was too high in reply and later struck a 25-yard shot wide following good work by Carson - with ex-Rangers winger Naismith similarly missing the target before the end of a disappointing second-half.
