Minstermen battle to crucial victory

York City striker Ryan Jarvis scored his ninth goal of the season to earn a first win in twelve games against Morecambe at Bootham Crescent.

The returning Jarvis was in the right place to finish after Michael Coulson's 30th minute corner had been headed on by Lewis Montrose.

Defender Keith Lowe later struck the woodwork while recalled goalkeeper Michael Ingham made a crucial late save to ensure maximum points and a move of two places up the table.

Manager Nigel Worthington responded to the weekend shocker by making four changes, with midfielder Tom Platt returning alongside Ingham, Coulson and Jarvis.

Meanwhile, Aaron McCarey, Elliott Whitehouse, Josh Carson and Ryan Bowman all missed out and there was no replacement goalkeeper included on the bench.

Despite York being the side most desperate for the win, it was their opponents who started better and and in fact had much of the opening half. Kevin Ellison saw a 20-yard shot deflected behind while Montrose did likewise at the other end.

Referee Nigel Miller wasted little time in incensing the home faithful with a very early booking for right-back Luke O'Neill before then overruling his assistant to award the visitors a dubious corner.

Restored keeper Ingham proved a busy man around the eighteen-minute mark when firstly parrying Jack Sampson's 25-yard shot and then turning away from Andrew Fleming. The former Northern Ireland international also had to tip over Tony Diagne's header following yet another cross.

However, it was York ironically forging ahead from a set-piece when determined work from Jarvis earned his side a corner, delivered by Coulson and headed back by Montrose for the former Torquay United marksman to hook high into the roof of the net.

Four minutes later Ingham reacted well to keep out Diagne's curling free-kick from just outside the area while Sampson and Ellison were both wayward.

O'Neill flashed a cross dangerously wide in reply and Montrose's through ball allowed Coulson an inviting delivery before Jarvis had a late first-half effort blocked.

The Minstermen attacked at a much-higher tempo towards their favoured home end with the wind in their favour following the restart, and man-of-the-match Oyebanjo almost turned in Jarvis' cross.

Oyebanjo then held off a heavy challenge and struck wide and Wes Fletcher missed the top corner from twenty-yards before only the woodwork denied Lowe, with a header from heading O'Neill's free-kick finding the angle.

Home striker Jarvis had another effort beaten away by Roche but then limped off with a tight hamstring and was replaced by Bowman.

Midway through the second period, Montrose charged down strongly and sent Fletcher into the area to only be denied by the feet of goalkeeper Roche.

Morecambe weren't actually threatening as much as prior to the break and were restricted to substitute Jack Redshaw despatching straight at Ingham while Bowman was wide in reply.

But with eight minutes remaining, Redshaw's header met fellow replacement Padraig Amond's cross and Ingham superbly blocked at the foot of his far post.

York made their second change with Carson entering the action and instantly despatching an 84th minute free-kick at Roche before releasing Bowman to find a dangerous cross deflect through to the keeper.

The visitors appeared to lose their composure during the later stages with a couple of bad challenges bringing them bookings as their opponents remained strong through a tense four minutes of added time.
