Minstermen falter again
Sat 25th Oct 3.00pm
York City once again demonstrated their inability to hold onto a lead as Diego De Girolamo's second goal for the club was cancelled out by Mansfield Town's recent loan arrival Daniel Carr.
Italian Under-20 international De Girolamo showed composure to earn the hosts a twentieth-minute lead. But the visitors proceeded to dominate as their opponents totally fell away following the break and were deservedly rewarded by Carr's equaliser just past the hour.
There were two enforced changes for the hosts with new goalkeeper Alex Cisak replacing Michael Ingham (thigh) and fellow loanee De Girolamo coming in for Jake Hyde (groin). Mansfield were themselves without nine players, including latest injury-victim, centre-back Martin Riley with a back spasm, and named only six substitutes.
Debutant Cisak held an early close-range header from Rakish Bingham, who then dragged a shot wide. Skipper Russell Penn replied with a long-range attempt gathered by Swiss goalkeeper Sascha Studer before Michael Coulson curled an early free-kick behind.
Bingham continued to appear lively for the visitors and drove narrowly wide of the far post after taunting Keith Lowe. But it was York going ahead when Penn seized upon a poor clearance from Studer and De Girolamo turned and calmly slotted home from close-range.
De Girolamo went close to another when forcing Studer into action from Lindon Meikle's cross. Ryan Brunt also saw a shot charged down from Meikle's pass and Coulson was wide from distance.
Mansfield pushed hard towards the end of the opening half and also started the second period well, although it was De Girolamo immediately having another shot saved. Rob Taylor replied with a free-kick into the defensive wall from the edge of the area.
Home striker Brunt headed a Michael Coulson cross over as the hour approached but his side had a fortunate escape when on loan forward Carr struck an upright.
The Stags continued to be on top and were level through the unmarked Carr volleying in after newcomer Vadaine Oliver knocked on Bingham's cross.
The Minstermen should have reclaimed their lead as Studer blocked from De Girolamo following good work by Coulson, although the visitors instantly broke for skipper Adam Murray to have a 30-yard drive saved by Cisak.
On loan striker Oliver next headed over while Coulson's shot was deflected inches wide at the opposite end. York then made a couple of changes with Tom Platt and Anthony Straker replacing Lewis Montrose and Meikle - with goalscorer Carr shooting narrowly wide in between.
Winger Coulson saw a low free-kick collected by Studer following De Girolamo being fouled on the edge of the area by the cautioned Jamie Sendles-White as the final ten minutes approached. However, Cusak was soon required to save from Bingham before Carr, Taylor and finally Murray struck further efforts wide as the visitors continued to dominate.
