York City 1 Guiseley 1
Tue 29th Nov 7.45pm
York City threw away the opportunity of their first win in seventeen games following a late Guiseley equaliser at Bootham Crescent.
Substitute Callum Rzonca's first goal for the club on the hour appeared to leave them as favourites but Jake Cassidy inevitably levelled with only five minutes remaining.
There were a couple of changes for the hosts with Matt Fry and Aidan Connolly returning at the expense of youngsters Charlie Cooper and Luke Woodland.
They soon combined for recalled defender Fry to head wide an early Connolly corner after the former Dundee United winger had an effort deflected behind.
Guiseley's latest signing Jonny Maxted then saved Connolly's header from Alex Whittle's cross before similarly blocking Robbie McDaid following Connor Brown's loose back-pass.
Former Forest Green Rovers goalkeeper Maxted also thwarted Jake Charles at his near post and Whittle speculatively from distance, while ex-York loanee Will Hatfield struck directly towards Kyle Letheren, who then turned aside from Jordan Preston on the break.
Home striker McDaid picked up the first caution and both Shaun Rooney and Fry were forced to head over their own crossbar just before the interval.
The Minstermen were playing towards their favoured home end at the start of the second-half and McDaid wastefully shot wide with Connolly waiting in support after the visitors squandered possession.
But Guiseley suddenly went close themselves when Rob Atkinson met a Simon Walton corner and his header was cleared off the line by Simon Heslop.
Manager Gary Mills had seen enough with Rzonca and Scott Fenwick replacing Charles and McDaid, and was soon rewarded by Rzonca slamming into the top right-hand corner from the edge of the area with the hour-mark approaching.
Fellow replacement Fenwick soon received the second booking of the contest before next heading wide - and Maxted punched away Connolly's free-kick.
Ex-York striker Michael Rankine was one of two substitutes introduced by the visitors and headed tamely at Letheren, while on loan Leeds United midfielder Alex Purver was cautioned for dragging back Sean Newton.
However, Guiseley still equalised with five minutes remaining when Rankine was involved at a Walton free-kick and Cassidy calmly slotted in.
Home defender Fry then saw an injury-time effort deflected over from Connolly's free-kick but it was again simply not good enough.
