Referee:

Sean Newton scored a dramatic late winner as York City secured a first home league victory since the beginning of September at the expense of promotion-chasing Barrow at Bootham Crescent.

The former Wrexham skipper lashed in deep into added time after newcomer Amari Morgan-Smith's second goal in two games was cancelled out by Jordan Williams with just sixteen minutes remaining.

York still remain bottom of the table as there were victories elsewhere for fellow strugglers Guiseley, North Ferriby United and Maidstone United - with the deficit towards immediate safety now reduced to four points.

There were earlier a couple of changes with new signing Hamza Bencherif being given a debut and striker Jon Parkin also being recalled following last week's FA Trophy victory at Harlow Town.

Those replaced the departed Daniel Nti and Adriano Moke, who dropped to the bench alongside another newcomer Johan ter Horst; in addition to fellow forward Vadaine Oliver for the first time this season.

And York had an opportunity inside the opening sixty seconds with Parkin volleying an Alex Whittle cross straight at on loan goalkeeper John Flatt, who then collected Shaun Rooney's low twenty-yard drive before Barrow's leading scorer Byron Harrison's replying header was well off-target.

But the hosts went in front midway through the opening half when Parkin flicked on keeper Kyle Lethethen's long kick for Morgan-Smith to slide past Flatt and register for the second consecutive game - against a club he'd recently shunned in favour of joining York.

Big striker Parkin immediately had another effort deflected wide following Shaun Beeley clearing onto a team-mate before sending a further attempt behind from Simon Lappin's free-kick. Richie Bennett was later very tame at Letheren on the turn.

Danny Holmes replaced Rooney for the start of the second-half but it was Moussa Diarra soon hauling down Morgan-Smith and somehow escaping with only a caution. Harrison was then wide of the mark at the other end

Parkin's half-volley swiftly called Flatt into action from distance before the already yellow-carded Diarra once again fouled Morgan-Smith to further incense the home faithful. Paul Turnbull next flashed a dangerous volley across the face of goal for the visitors and Williams similarly struck wide.

Barrow were certainly much more of a threat during the second period and equalised as Williams stole the ball away from Letheren's reaches on 74 minutes and turned to find an inviting open goal. Bennett rapidly headed over from another opportunity.

The Minstermen went close to an instant response with Parkin only denied by the outside of an upright from Whittle's cross; that ahead of Oliver coming off the bench to replace Lappin in a strengthened three-man front-line.

And substitute Oliver's header was soon thwarted by Flatt from Newton's late free-kick; although then suddenly delivering a long throw deep into added time that was twice flicked on and blasted in at the far post by Newton.
