Striker Jon Parkin scored twice as York City moved off the foot of the table with a 3-1 victory against Eastleigh at Bootham Crescent.

The veteran marksman claimed a priceless double inside the opening thirteen minutes of the contest, but a dreadful mistake from goalkeeper Kyle Letheren immediately let the visitors straight back into it.

Both teams were then denied by the woodwork during the second-half before Vadaine Oliver finally settled the issue with ten minutes remaining.

The Minstermen were unchanged from midweek after Oliver passed a fitness test on a dead-leg. Latest signing Derwin Martina was included amongst their substitutes alongside the recalled Danny Holmes following his one-match suspension.

Midweek goalscorer Parkin was actually off-target with an early long-range chip. But Sean Newton's long throw was soon helped on by Oliver for Parkin to volley in at the far post. Stearn instantly drilled a free-kick over at the other end.

However, York rapidly extended their advantage in virtually identical fashion when Simon Heslop's throw was again flicked on by Oliver for Parkin to finish at close-range.

Within three minutes Eastleigh were gifted a reply after Stearn's inswinging free-kick into the area was totally missed by Letheren as the ball bounced straight through his legs.

Skipper Heslop's shot from the edge of the area was next saved at his near post by Ryan Clarke when Parkin held up another long throw by Newton.

The contest was at last beginning to settle following its frantic start with Parkin heading wide a Newton cross. On loan Portsmouth midfielder Ben Close in turn nodded over as the hosts struggled to clear.

Newton then replied too high from distance with the interval fast approaching, although Oliver wastefully struck wide of the near post from Heslop's through pass in added time.

Now attacking towards their favoured home end, York defender Newton saw an early second-half cross parried behind by Clarke while Oliver was later denied following Heslop's break.

Amari Morgan-Smith then had a close-range finish from Newton's corner hit the unsuspecting Gavin Hoyte on the line, with Hamza Bencherif heading over from his next delivery.

Heslop was soon cautioned for a strong challenge on Ben Strevens, before his colleagues had a fortunate escape when substitute Tyler Garratt fired against an upright from the edge of the area.

But York went very close themselves as Oliver's looping header from Asa Hall's corner was turned onto the crossbar by Clarke. Midfielder Close drove wide at the opposite end before recalled striker James Constable also lifted over.

However, into the final ten minutes and Oliver determinedly held off marker Ayo Obileye inside the area and slotted into the corner to the delight of the home supporters.

Garratt blasted well wide in reply and fellow replacement Scott Wilson also curled behind, while Oliver's injury-time shot was deflected away as the hosts secured a vital triumph.
