YCX-Files: Ian Butler
Ian Butler was a vital addition to the York City ranks ahead of their successful promotion season of 1973-74 after joining the club from Hull City.

A highly talented outside-left, Butler was born in Barnsley and originally represented Yorkshire Boys. But he was soon snapped up by Rotherham United manager Tom Johnston and later moved to Hull City for 40,000 in January 1965.

Butler went on to make more than 300 senior appearances for the Tigers before his former boss Johnston came calling again and took him to York for a club record fee of approaching 10,000 in July 1973.

His experience was to prove invaluable despite him making only 53 appearances, during which he netted three times, including a memorable winner against Orient in a League Cup third round replay at Bootham Crescent.

He later made five appearances on loan for hometown club Barnsley, where he scored once, and his son Martin went on to play for York during the mid-and-late eighties.

Ah the Butler! Remembered as the player who scored the goal that took Hull City up in 1966. Very fondly remembered.
