Red Rewind: York man enough for City challenge

Red Rewind: York man enough for City challenge
Eighteen years ago today on 19th December 1998, York City sensationally defeated Manchester City 2-1 in a Nationwide League Two encounter at Bootham Crescent.

A first-ever league meeting between the two clubs was to have a really dramatic ending when an unknown teenage debutant emerged as a true festive hero.

The Minstermen started off with real intent and shocked their illustrious visitors inside the opening two minutes, Scottish winger Gordon Connelly drilling home from fifteen-yards following Richard Cresswell's low cross.

But apart from unsuccessful penalty claims by Cresswell after seemingly being impeded, York's threat swiftly subsided and Craig Russell escaped the attentions of Barry Jones to equalise with a speculative 32nd minute shot that deflected off outstanding defender Tony Barras and over goalkeeper Bobby Mimms.

With midfielder Ian Bishop now dictating the action alongside the equally impressive Jamie Pollock, the visitors appeared firm favourites to go on and win the game.

However, they reckoned without home keeper Mimms, who produced a brilliant double-save to keep out Pollock and then Gareth Taylor right at the start of the second-half.

York suffered further blows with both goalscorer Connelly and striker Neil Tolson limping out of the proceedings and it seemed only a matter of time before their great resistance would be broken.

When the next goal came though it incredibly went in the opposite direction and to a most unlikely source.

Local-born full-back Andrew Dawson had only just replaced Connelly on 84 minutes. Within a couple of moments the nineteen-year-old accepted a clever reverse pass from fellow substitute Rodney Rowe and with his first touch curled in a sensational left-footed winner.
