Red Rewind: Woking Special #1

Red Rewind: Woking Special #1
York City have won on their last three league visits to Woking and began the sequence when achieving a 2-1 victory back in September 2006.

The Minstermen raced into an interval two-goal lead following a really dominant opening forty-five minutes. But they still had to withstand a late fightback to secure themselves a fourth away success in five attempts following similar outcomes at Stevenage Borough, Gravesend & Northfleet and Rushden & Diamonds.

Their hosts could instantly have been reduced to ten-men after Simon Jackson dragged down lively newcomer Martyn Woolford when preparing a clear run on goal.

But the decision was only a caution and Craig Farrell's resultant free-kick produced a low stop from goalkeeper Shwan Jalal.

Meanwhile, City midfielder Lewis McMahon also drifted a twenty-yard effort behind before ace goalscorer Clayton Donaldson had a firm drive blocked and right-back Darren Craddock hoisted over from a free-kick.

However, Farrell soon released the lightening Donaldson direct from a Woking corner, and he raced into the area and allowed the supporting Woolford to drive in off the inside of an upright from eight-yards.

Woolford then added his second of the evening just ahead of the interval as Donaldson beautifully laid off McMahon's ball inside the box.

Woking's only response during the opening period had seen Karl Murray dragging an attempt wide - and their keeper Jalal was called into immediate second-half action to thwart midfielder Neal Bishop.

Two-goal Woolford also sliced another attempt wide before City left-back Anthony Lloyd suddenly lost possession and Danny Bunce crossed for on loan Stevenage striker Jon Nurse to shoot low past Tom Evans.

Stand-in captain Steve Bowey was soon threatening another for the visitors as the alert Jalal raced off his line.

But it was now the hosts pressing strongly for an equaliser and substitute Steve Ferguson hoisted over with only goalkeeper Evans left to beat in added time.
