Red Rewind: Woking Special #2

Red Rewind: Woking Special #2
York City have won on their last three league visits to Woking and continued the sequence with a commanding 3-0 success in October 2007.

The Minstermen arrived to take on opponents actually unbeaten in their previous dozen home fixtures but were always in control at the Kingfield Stadium.

They made a rapid enough start with centre-back Darren Kelly heading wide from Martyn Woolford's corner before Onome Sodje lifted over advancing goalkeeper Nick Gindre from around eight-yards for their opening strike on just four minutes.

Midfielder Stuart Elliott then curled a free-kick behind while Joe Gatting volleyed straight at Tom Evans by way of a response.

Back came York, with Woolford dragging wide from the edge of the area, although Cards skipper Paul Lorraine should have done better from Danny Bunce's corner six minutes prior to the break.

There was still enough time remaining in the first-half for Elliott to drill a twenty-yard effort at Gindre and centre-back David McGurk to head onto the crossbar from Woolford's corner.

York still doubled their advantage early in the second period when keeper Gindre failed to control Matt Pattison's risky back-pass and the predatory Sodje found the unattended net.

City counterpart Evans was though required to block Jay Gasson's header on the hour, but the visitors struck again as on loan forward Daniel McBreen released Sodje to be initially halted by Gindre on 71 minutes.

However, the two-goal marksman immediately produced an inspired overhead assist for Woolford to celebrate his 22nd birthday by drilling past Lorraine's despairing attempted block from eight-yards.

Both Woolford and Elliott could have further added to the scoreline during the later stages.
