Red Rewind: City crush high-ranking leaders

Red Rewind: City crush high-ranking leaders
Rewinding memories to the beginning of February 2011, when York City encountered Blue Square Premier leaders AFC Wimbledon at Bootham Crescent - and emerged as very comfortable 4-1 winners.

The Minstermen seized a firm grip of the contest with first-half goals from defensive pair Daniel Parslow and James Meredith, and although Christian Jolley pulled one back for their high-flying opponents after the break, a couple of 'goal of the season' contenders from Michael Rankine and Ashley Chambers secured them a richly-deserved 4-1 victory.

Midfielder Levi Mackin and Rankine both saw early attempts in a bright start from the home side, who were looking to recover from their shock weekend defeat at Southport. And they were soon rewarded as Parslow headed in his first goal of the season from Ashley Chambers' sixteenth-minute free-kick, earned by promising debutant Liam Darville.

The lively Chambers then burst past a couple of challenges and goalkeeper Seb Brown inside the area before unfortunately running out of pitch. The on loan Leicester City striker was also within inches of connecting with Meredith's cross before Mackin shot wide as the hosts continued to enjoy the ascendancy.

AFC Wimbledon had really shown nothing aside from a few long throws sent inside the area and collected by goalkeeper Michael Ingham. And York were again rewarded for their superiority in first-half added time when Jonathan Smith released Meredith to expertly claim his first goal for the club through a cool finish past Brown.

Home midfielder Jonathan Smith should then have been on the scoresheet himself after the break when driving straight at Brown after a superb through ball from Scott Kerr - one of two impressive York debutants.

The Dons suddenly began to discover some of the form that had taken them to the top of the table, however, and Jolley took advantage of a fortunate ricochet off home skipper Chris Smith to lash in via the underside of the crossbar just after the hour.

But Rankine should almost certainly have redressed the balance when substitute Chris Carruthers' cross left him with only keeper Brown to beat following another tremendous Meredith break.

Leading scorer Rankine did enjoy better fortune moments later though with an absolutely brilliant 25-yard strike into the top corner of the net.

York keeper Ingham then saved from substitute Mark Nwokeji before Chambers curled a glorious fourth goal with six minutes remaining.

There was still enough time remaining for Chambers to spurn a fifth when shooting straight at Brown before Meredith had an effort deflected wide as the league leaders were left as a well-beaten outfit.
