Red Rewind: Four-goal City gain victory

Red Rewind: Four-goal City gain victory
Heading back to the only previous meeting between Gainsborough Trinity and York City - an FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round tie at the Northolme in October 2005.

Despite facing a second campaign in the Conference Premier, Billy McEwan's side were always strong favourites going into the clash against their lower-ranked, part-time Conference North opponents.

And they wasted little time going in front, Clayton Donaldson being on the end of Mark Convery's long thirteenth-minute through ball - until being tripped inside the area by right-back Wes Parker.

Fellow striker Andy Bishop stepped up and clinically despatched the resultant penalty to goalkeeper Jamie Holmshaw's left.

The visitors were without chief midfield enforcer Emmanuel Panther and proceeded to witness tall defender Richard Pell threaten with three headers at the other end, while Charlie Trout also dragged wide of the post with only Chris Porter left to beat.

Former Chesterfield marksman David Reeves then headed straight at Porter just before the break, although his colleagues suddenly fell further behind despite otherwise restricting their opponents to Donaldson curling a twenty-yard attempt over.

This time stylish approach work eventually found left-back Nathan Peat delivering a fine cross towards the far post and Bishop heading in his second of the afternoon.

With a two-goal lead at the interval and against noticeably tiring opposition, York extended their advantage just beyond the hour when Donaldson raced onto another Convery through ball and held off defender Nick Ellis before adroitly rounding the keeper.

In truth the visitors should really have scored more: Convery testing Holmshaw with a fierce drive, Joe O'Neill scooping over from six-yards and substitute Ryan Mallon firing too close to the keeper.

Centre-back James Dudgeon also headed wide from close-range - and Convery was similarly wayward, until later side-footing into the corner following substitute Bryan Stewart surging down the left.

There was still enough time remaining for earlier goalscorers Bishop and Donaldson to both miss with further opportunities.
