Red Rewind: Debutant Parkin opens account

Red Rewind: Debutant Parkin opens account
Striker Jon Parkin scored his two-hundredth senior career goal at the weekend, so it's perhaps a suitable time to travel back over fifteen years for the very first of those; appropriately a late winner on his York City debut at ten-man Southend United on 9th February 2002.

The Minstermen had actually gone into the contest following a bizarre midweek 5-4 defeat at Rochdale leaving them just a single place off the bottom of Division Three.

Manager Terry Dolan reacted by making three changes, including an immediate start for new signing Parkin, who'd only arrived on loan from Barnsley a couple of days earlier.

Goalkeeper Alan Fettis was making his one-hundredth appearance for the visitors, and routinely dealt with an eighteen-yard shot from Carl Hutchings in an otherwise rather uneventful opening half-hour.

But York should really have gone in front when Sunderland loanee Michael Proctor broke clear and chipped tamely at keeper Darryl Flahavan. Proctor was also frustrated by a timely Leon Cort block before Tes Bramble tested Fettis from distance.

Referee Grant Hegley soon displayed little hesitation in giving United's Mark Beard a straight red card for stamping on also cautioned City defender Matt Hocking seven minutes from the break.

Home striker Mark Rawle still headed an opportunity wide following Bramble's cross towards the far post, and Phil Whelan was similarly wayward upon the restart.

Northern Ireland international Fettis then produced a fine save to meet Stuart Thurgood's deflected 25-yard shot, and substitute Tony Richards could later also only find the keeper, this time from around four-yards. Searle next delivered for Hutchings to head against the underside of the crossbar.

However, York were not without chances of their own and Flahavan reacted supremely to thwart little striker Peter Duffield, while Barrington Belgrave replied over the target as the final stages approached.

And with just six minutes remaining the deadlock was finally broken, newcomer Parkin looping a twelve-yard header over the helpless Flahavan and into the corner; although there was still time for Fettis to crucially keep out substitute Scott Forbes before the away followers could really celebrate.
