Rewind Extra: Goal ace departs York

Rewind Extra: Goal ace departs York
We're heading back to March 1996 as one of York City's finest-ever goalscorers moves to England's 'second city'.

York City's transfer-listed marksman Paul Barnes has completed a big-money move to First Division side Birmingham City, with former Nottingham Forest and Barnet striker Gary Bull heading in the opposite direction.

While officials at Bootham Crescent were remaining tight-lipped about the fee involved, various sources around Birmingham understood the deal as being around £350,000 to £400,000, according to The Press.

Barnes, 28, scored 85 goals in 179 games for the Minstermen, although a parting of the ways was always inevitable after talks over a new contract broke down in January and the player was subsequently transfer-listed.

He originally arrived at York in a then record-equalling £50,000 move from Stoke City in July 1992; immediately scoring on his debut in a 2-0 win against Shrewsbury Town, while on the way to amassing a very impressive 21 goals and clinching a glorious promotion at Wembley.

That was increased to 25 in his next season, before a reduced effort of 17, which still featured superb hat-tricks against Bournemouth and Blackpool, was again improved to 22 in 41 appearances this time around. Those famously included a spectacular brace in the 3-0 League Cup victory at Manchester United in September. He was leading marksman in all four seasons at the club.

Meanwhile, Tipton-born Bull is the cousin of England striker Steve and began his career with Southampton, until then joining Cambridge United.

However, it was following a move to Barry Fry's Barnet that he began making his own headlines, with his 37 goals in 83 games prompting a £300,000 switch to Nottingham Forest.

Unfortunately his time at the City Ground was too often met by injury, and Bull reunited with former boss Fry at Birmingham on a free transfer just six weeks ago.

York boss Alan Little remained a keen admirer, though, and will hope his latest capture can help fill the void caused by the departure of prized-asset Barnes.

This latest move has sent City's transfer income crashing through the £1m barrier this season after winger Jon McCarthy was also sold to Port Vale for £450,000 back in August.

Manager Martin Gray was once again deeply frustrated following a 1-1 draw with lowly part-timers Alfreton Town at Bootham Crescent.

York City produced another deeply uninspiring display while being held 1-1 by lowly part-timers Alfreton Town at Bootham Crescent.

That was despite midfielder Simon Heslop earning them an early fifth-minute lead that was cancelled out by former York defender Tom Allan before the break.

Manager Martin Gray earlier made a single-change from the woeful 4-1 defeat at Curzon Ashton, with goalscorer Alex Kempster given a full debut as replacement for the suspended Jon Parkin. Louis Almon
