Rewind Extra: Billy's final lament

Rewind Extra: Billy's final lament
It's back to November 2007 and a popular outgoing manager expressing his deep regret at leaving Bootham Crescent.

Billy McEwan has spoken of his extreme disappointment at being "unable to see the job through" at York City.

The plain-speaking Scot discovered his near three-year reign ending with the Minstermen currently labouring in nineteenth position in the Blue Square Premier.

McEwan, 56, was shown the door after their weekend 3-1 home defeat to Salisbury City. That followed a series of face-to-face meetings with the board regarding a disappointing start to the campaign in which City had won just one of their opening ten league games.

He'd previously steered the club into the play-offs, narrowly losing out to Morecambe in the semi-final, but the subsequent departure of leading marksman Clayton Donaldson had proven costly.

"The fans have been absolutely fantastic," McEwan told The Press. "They have been behind me all the way through. This season has been difficult, but I will take a lot of memories away.

"I have always said 'judge me over the full season'. I have had two fantastic seasons, in my opinion, and built the club up. It's a fantastic club, with great fans and whoever gets the job has a dream start.

"I am really, really disappointed I was not able to see the job through. I always thought it was going to be a three to four year job and, in 2003, this club was dead.

"We got into the play-offs and it was incredible and unbelievable. I always said my ambition was to fill the ground, I did that. Average gates were up and there were heady days for York City.

"But I honestly believe the players can take the club a lot higher. They have got the calibre of Craddock, Panther, Woolford, Farrell - the talent is absolutely unbelievable."

McEwan was apparently sacked after receiving a phone call from chairman Jason McGill, much to his disappointment.

"I got a call from the chairman at 10.15am letting me know the board unanimously wanted me to move on immediately," he revealed. "The McGill family are York through and through but it was a little bit disappointing. But they are nice people and I'm sure they will progress the club."

Director of communications Sophie McGill responded on behalf of the club: "It is not something that, in an ideal situation, we would obviously do but this has all happened very quickly. It has come to a head after the Salisbury game and the board were all asked to provide their views - which happened over the weekend.

"We are volunteer directors with jobs to do and Jason had a business meeting, in association with JM Packaging, at 11.30am and it didn't give him the opportunity to go into the club," she explained.

"Over the past few weeks the board has met Billy McEwan face-to-face several times and, in the last week, Jason and Rob McGill have had face-to-face meetings with him about the situation and the way forward."
