Red Rewind: Debutant keeps it clean

Red Rewind: Debutant keeps it clean
Rewinding back to January 2003 and the debut of a very popular goalkeeper who went on to make in excess of three-hundred senior appearances for the club.

It was all change at the KC Stadium following the shock return of star goalkeeper Alan Fettis to Hull City, with his successor and fellow Northern Ireland international Michael Ingham maintaining York City's first clean-sheets in eleven attempts.

As Fettis took in the action from the home substitutes bench, York controlled much of the proceedings with the on loan Sunderland keeper their final line of defence, and could even have come away with an unlikely victory.

Indeed within a minute of the start another Wearside loanee, Michael Reddy, produced a disappointing first touch following a slip from John Anderson and allowed Paul Musselwhite to gather.

Debutant Ingham soon courageously blocked from Stuart Green after a flighted ball towards the other end from Stuart Elliott, although the visitors began appearing increasingly confident.

And with just under half-an-hour completed they should really have taken the lead. Withdrawn striker Lee Nogan stole possession from Ian Ashbee and allowed Graham Potter to cross for Peter Duffield, who uncharacteristically blazed over from ten-yards with only Musselwhite left to beat.

Midfielder Potter then twice missed from sharp angles before his inswinging corner was turned into the net by Duffield as Musselwhite failed to gather - only for referee Grant Hegley to adjudge a foul.

The Tigers made a double-change at the interval - and their main creative source Elliott soon delivered for newcomer Jamie Forrester to be denied at point-blank range after Ingham threw himself forward and blocked with his face.

However, York once again went desperately close as the clever Nogan combined with Potter and his through pass witnessed Reddy stabbing beyond Musselwhite - but also inches past the upright.

The Minstermen continued to keep possession well, much to the frustration of the vast majority in the 18,437 attendance, whose subsequent booing of their team clearly indicated it had been mission accomplished by the visitors.
