Rewind Extra: Barnes to the fore

Rewind Extra: Barnes to the fore
Skipping back to the headlines of February 1993 and recalling a superb individual performance from a brilliant goalscorer.

York City striker Paul Barnes was celebrating a personal four-goal haul against Scunthorpe United at Bootham Crescent.

The 25-year-old became the first City player to achieve the feat in 32 years and only the fourth in its entire league history.

Defying arctic conditions, 'blizzard-wizard' Barnes struck twice in each half and fellow striker Ian Blackstone was similarly on target in a destructive 5-1 rout.

His achievement was all the sweeter as his family had specially travelled up from Leicester to witness the spectacle.

"While it was a dream come true for me, it was a great all-round team performance," Barnes modestly told The Press. "It was just one of those days. Everything I hit was on target. Confidence comes with scoring goals and after the first two I felt I could get more, though I was a bit worried that the referee might call the game off.

"For the fourth goal I just laid my boot into the ball and I thought 'let it go'," he continued. "It was a great all-round team performance. The attitude of the lads was first-class and the build-up play was superb - I was just lucky to be on the end of things."

Manager John Ward was naturally ecstatic at the performance of the club's record £50,000 signing from Stoke City in July.

"Last season he scored 30 goals and while they were in the Pontin's Central League, it was his attitude which convinced myself and Alan Little that he could do a job for York City," he recounted.

"When he misses a chance he always put himself in for another opportunity. When he scores he is always looking to get more goals.

"His finishing was exceptional. You cannot do it all the time - that's why it's so special when you do."

Curzon Ashton 4 York City 1

York City produced a shockingly atrocious performance while crashing 4-1 to lowly part-timers Curzon Ashton at the Tameside Stadium.

Home striker Niall Cummins claimed a first-half hat-trick having already seen a penalty saved by the outstanding Adam Bartlett, with Sam Walker adding to it after the break.

The visitors then had leading goalscorer Jon Parkin given a straight red card before new signing Alex Kempster impressively replied on his debut after coming off the bench.
