Red Rewind: Rocket-man Marc!

Red Rewind: Rocket-man Marc!
Turning the clock back towards March 1999 - and there's a brand new goalscorer making the headlines after an explosive Sunday afternoon double in Lincolnshire.

Without a victory in almost three months and having also just lost the services of their England Under-21 international striker Richard Cresswell, York City were offered renewed hope following a couple of late, late goals at Lincoln City.

However, it hadn't begun particularly well; goalkeeper Andy Warrington fending-off from Gavin Gordon within seven seconds of the start before Paul Miller lashed in a half-volley after Welsh international David Phillips' cross was headed down by Lee Thorpe.

York striker Marc Williams, playing only his second game since joining from neighbours Halifax Town, witnessed a stabbed attempt blocked by goalkeeper John Vaughan; although Stuart Bimson's cross-shot reply suddenly caught the wind and dipped narrowly over the crossbar. Warrington also thwarted Gordon again before the break.

But the visitors went agonisingly close to an equaliser with the hour-mark approaching; tall centre-forward Neil Tolson and right-back Barry Jones allowing debutant winger Craig Skinner to crash a shot onto the crossbar.

Fellow wide-man Alan Pouton also struck behind and Wayne Hall's inswinging corner was fisted off the line by Vaughan as the away side continued to search for a way back into the contest.

That dramatically arrived with seventeen minutes remaining. Williams was always a nagging threat and from Tolson's helpful flick, blasted an absolute wonder-volley beyond the helpless Vaughan from around twenty-eight yards. It was simply magnificent.

Sixty seconds later and Scott Jordan's first-time effort once again rattled the crossbar, while Williams' later searing drive was gratefully clasped by Vaughan at the second attempt. York defender Jones then cleared off the line from Gordon at the other end.

Even so it was the visitors claiming maximum points with eleven minutes left, when the bustling Williams - already a renowned goalscorer in his Welsh homeland - raced away from the opposition following another accommodating Tolson flick-on, and the ball found its inevitable destination in the back of the home net.
