Rewind Extra: Big opportunity for Little

Rewind Extra: Big opportunity for Little
It's back to March 1993 and York City are suddenly reeling following the loss of one of the brightest new managers in the game - and that on the eve of a vital promotion clash.

Caretaker boss Alan Little insists that he is the man to take the club forward after the shock departure of highly-rated chief John Ward to Bristol Rovers.

The 38-year-old originally moved to the Minstermen as coach to John Bird in October 1988, and has now been placed in temporary charge.

Promotion-chasing York have ten league games remaining, starting with a huge visit tomorrow to current Division Three leaders Barnet.

"I am ambitious and would like to be a manager," Little told The Press. "I have been put in complete charge of playing affairs from now until the end of the season and I will be looking to continue the good work of John.

"I have already had a chat with the players and told them what I want from the game against Barnet," he continued. "I will be looking for all John would have wanted - and a little bit more.

"I would like to see a touch more hardness in the side as we go into these last two months of the season.

"I have stressed the importance of pulling together and if we do that, there is no reason why we can't gain promotion."

However, Little could face tough competition for the position with Bristol Rovers chief coach Malcolm Allison claiming he was already preparing to take over at York following his own departure from Twerton Park.

Former Manchester City legend Allison, 65, insisted that City "want me", although nobody from Bootham Crescent was available for comment.
